Tips & Tricks for Outdoor Stone River Bathtubs.

River stone bathtubs, carved from natural boulders and shaped and finished by craftspeople, are perhaps the most popular stone bath tubs in the world. Their popularity stems from their uniqueness – each bathtub is different and one-of-a-kind. Even if you find a bathtub made from the same stone elsewhere, it will undoubtedly have a different shape, color, and size. Just as there are no two identical stones in a river, it is impossible to create two identical river stone bathtubs or stone sinks.

Their popularity, along with their resistance to weather conditions, chemicals, stone hardness, and relatively low cost, has led customers and architects to seek new uses for them. A few years ago, when they were only used in the bathrooms of individual apartments, they became increasingly popular in hotels and SPA and Wellness studios. Then, with the trend of smaller bathtubs, they were purchased for bedrooms or terraces. For the past three years, we have observed increased interest in orders for river stone bathtubs for outdoor use, whether the client intends to install them in very hot or very cold climates with snow and freezing temperatures.

What do you need to know to produce or purchase a river stone bath tub for outdoor use?

Certainly, not every manufacturer has the knowledge or experience regarding what happens to a bathtub after it is sold and used outdoors. If you want to use a river stone bathtub outdoors, because there are many advantages to this idea (more on that below), then marble bathtubs, onyx bathtubs, petrified wood bathtubs, and bathtubs assembled from separate stone panels should not be assumed suitable for exposed outdoor use. For our outdoor projects, we assess selected river stone boulders against the intended climate and installation. Suitability cannot be established from a material name or photograph alone.

River stone bathtubs for very hot climates.

If you plan to use a stone bathtub outdoors and live in a place where it gets very hot, such as Australia, Dubai, Greece, Portugal, Italy, or even Iran, Tunisia, Israel, Egypt, California, Texas, or any other extremely hot place on Earth, as some of our customers do who have had our bathtubs in such conditions for several years, you must inform the manufacturer about the installation location when making the purchase. In this case, you should receive a bathtub with stone that is devoid of veins. The manufacturer must be knowledgeable and able to distinguish veins from what is referred to as the “stone’s pattern” – only visual streaks and discolorations.

Deep veins in the stone, when the bathtub is heated to very high temperatures (in full, southern sun), create tension in the stone, especially with such a large volume and mass, and can lead to cracks in the bathtub! A structural discontinuity can provide a path along which a crack develops (see the example below – a bathtub made by inexperienced individuals). The stone bathtub manufacturer should consider that stone easily absorbs ambient temperature, accumulates it, and slowly releases it. Prolonged solar exposure and abrupt temperature changes can increase the risk where the material is unsuitable. The example illustrates a failure we have encountered; it is not a test proving that every stone with visible veining will fail.

✓ Additional advice from us:
Plan shading and an appropriate cover with the manufacturer, and avoid sudden temperature changes in a sun-heated bathtub. Leaving a small amount of water in the base is not a general guarantee against cracking and is not a substitute for a drainage and cleaning plan. Follow the care instructions for the actual stone and installation.

Top 3 benefits of having a solid river stone bathtub outdoors in very hot climates.

  • For a cooling soak, first check the temperature of the stone and follow the agreed filling procedure. Avoid abruptly filling a very hot stone vessel with very cold water. The stone, water and surrounding air exchange heat; the resulting temperature depends on all three.
  • A stone bathtub outdoors is much cheaper than a pool, easier to maintain, trouble-free, more enjoyable, and provides much more relaxation. While lying in such a bathtub, you feel the naturalness of the stone, you can enjoy the view, read, listen to music, or simply do nothing. This is impossible in a pool.
    • Your natural stone bathtub will be an exceptional decorative element for your terrace or garden. Some of our customers also use standing river stone sinks.

Outdoor Stone Sinks

If your investment is in a location where there is a season with a lot of snow and freezing temperatures, such as Canada, Norway, Alaska, Austria, Switzerland, New York, like many of our customers, inform the manufacturer of your idea. The stone used for your bathtub must be free from microcracks, microfissures. Extracting such stone for your bathtub must be free from shocks and impacts that can cause internal cracks or delamination of the stone. Water entering fissures and then freezing can enlarge existing damage and eventually cause leakage. The outcome depends on the stone, its moisture condition and exposure; it is not determined by a visible line alone. This is because water, even in the form of moisture during freezing, expands its volume. When it turns into ice, it cracks the microcracks in the stone, causing larger gaps over time, which eventually causes the bathtub to leak and become unusable. A stone bathtub manufacturer for such a location must be absolutely certain that the stone used for production has not experienced shocks that could cause internal cracks.

We once received an order from an investor who asked us to cut longitudinal grooves on the bottom of the bathtub because he wanted to place a type of underfloor heating, which was connected to the home’s heating system, in the bathtub’s base. This was four years ago, and it still functions today.

✓ Additional advice from us:

  • Agree a winterisation procedure before installation. When the system is out of service, protect it from trapped water freezing in the vessel, drain, trap or supply pipes, following the installer’s instructions. Regular use or a fixed two-month sealing schedule does not establish frost resistance. Select any treatment and its maintenance interval for the actual stone and product; an impregnator does not repair structural cracks.

Top 2 benefits of having a river stone bathtub outdoors in a cold climate.

  • Cold-weather bathing requires a tub and plumbing installation assessed for those conditions. Do not use hot water to thaw a frozen vessel or frozen plumbing. Follow the manufacturer’s and installer’s agreed operating limits and gradual filling procedure.
  • A suitable installation can provide an outdoor bathing experience in cold weather, but water temperature also depends on the hot-water supply, wind, ambient temperature and the stone’s initial temperature. Plan these factors together rather than relying on repeated filling alone.

Fun Fact: A river stone bathtub for outdoor use doesn’t have to have an irregular shape. We also produce river stone bathtubs with smooth, polished exteriors in regular shapes. The stone retains the same natural properties, while you have the flexibility to choose any shape—round, rectangular, or oval—customized to your preferred dimensions.

Questions to resolve before choosing an outdoor stone bathtub

Will my hot-water system fill a large bathtub?

Check the planned bathing volume and the flow at the bath filler, not only the tank size. As a simple example, 250 litres at a steady 15 litres per minute takes about 16.7 minutes to fill. This is a flow calculation, not a promise that the water will stay at the required temperature. The hot-water system must supply the required temperature throughout that time, allowing for other simultaneous use. Storage systems have a first-hour rating; instantaneous systems have a flow limit for a specified temperature rise. Ask your installer to match the system to the actual bathtub and local supply. See the US Department of Energy water-heating guide.

Does a thick stone wall act like insulation?

Thermal mass and insulation are different. A cold stone bathtub initially absorbs heat from warmer water; a warmed stone body can later release stored heat. Thickness alone cannot predict how long a bath will remain comfortable. Initial stone temperature, water volume, exposed surface, wind and any cover all matter. We do not assign a universal cooling time to every model.

Is outdoor suitability the same as frost resistance?

No. A sheltered tropical installation and an exposed site with repeated freezing are different conditions. Ask about the specific stone and any applicable test evidence, support and drainage, winter shutdown and maintenance. The Natural Stone Institute’s material-selection guidance identifies freeze–thaw, thermal cycling, immersion and chemical exposure as factors to consider before selection and design.

Choose a shape and colour from our natural stone bathtub collection, then discuss the site conditions directly with our workshop before confirming the material. For a real project in a tropical setting, see the Twinpalms Phuket Eclipse installation. That example does not establish suitability for a freezing climate.
