**A finished bathtub 350 cm long, carved from one river boulder, weighing almost three tonnes and holding more than 700 litres of water.** This Lux4home project in Indonesia was gigantic even by our workshop’s standards. Producing it was one challenge. Packing and preparing it for delivery to the USA was another.

Probably the world’s largest bathtub carved from a single boulder? That is the question behind this project story, not a certified world-record claim. What we can show is the actual bath: one monolithic piece of natural stone, its dimensions and the work involved in making an unusual commission possible.

From a river boulder to a monolithic bath
-----------------------------------------

The work began with finding a suitable stone in an Indonesian river. A partly submerged boulder does not reveal its entire shape before extraction. Selecting and moving it required an experienced team, and the material then had to be transported to our factory.

We cut away the top section and our craftspeople began carving out the bathing space by hand. The bath was made from a single monolith, rather than assembled from stone panels. Its natural exterior and carved interior remain parts of the same original boulder.

The completed bath needed a wooden crate and a handling plan suited to its size and weight. The shipping container had an internal width of approximately 2.35 metres, so the 3.5-metre-long bath had to be positioned lengthwise. Loading and unloading required specially arranged forklift handling, including at the customer’s destination in the USA.

For a project of this scale, access, lifting equipment and structural support must be assessed for the actual site. The installed load also includes water and users. What an unusual commission makes possible
-----------------------------------------

We share this project because it shows what custom production can involve beyond a catalogue model. Other commissions have included two baths cut from one boulder and a matching bath and basin made from the same original stone. Each project starts with a discussion of the customer’s idea, the available material and the practical limits of manufacture and delivery.

An unusual bathing space does not have to be 3.5 metres long. If your aim is a bath designed around soaking comfort, explore our [custom soaking bathtubs](https://www.lux4home.com/soaking-bathtubs/). That category explains the dimensions and bathing requirements to discuss for your own project; the giant bath shown here is one individual commission.
